The National Hurricane
Center begins naming tropical storms in 1953. These names of hurricanes were retired within the decades since the 1950s. They caused untold damage and therefore the hurricane names were retired in history.

What are the deadliest hurricanes in US History? Galveston
Texas in 1900 with a reported 8,000 people dead, followed by Lake Okeechobee, Florida
in 1928 with 2,500 reported dead. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 comes in third with 1,800.

What hurricane is considered the most expensive as far as damages go? That honor or horror goes to Katrina in 2005, which heavily damaged
Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, with a reported 76,000,000,000 dollars worth of damage. Andrew comes in second with 45,000,000,000 dollars worth of damages, followed by Charlie with 15,400,000,000 dollars worth of damages.

Hurricanes have to be horrific to have their names retired. With 20 names, by far the current decade has had more storm names retired then any other decade since the National Hurricane center has been naming storms. How many more will be retired in this decade, we will just have to wait and see. The 90s only saw 15 hurricane names retired during that century. The 80s was the century with the least number of hurricane names retired with seven.

What is the year that has had the most hurricane names retired? That honor or horror goes to 2005, with Jeanne, Dennis, Katrina, Rita, and Stan seeing the five hurricane names being retired. There is a three-way tie for second place with 1955, 1995, and 2004 each having four hurricane names retired.
