You want to eat at least five servings of fruit a day. A recent study has shown that if you consume 400 or more grams daily of fruits or vegetables it reduces all cancers by at least 20 percent. Those who eat the highest amount of fruits and vegetables have been proven to have one half the risk of getting cancer than those eating the least amount.

Choose food from plant sources such as cereals, bread, rice, or grain prodcuts several times each and every day. Try to limit your consumption of refined carbohydrates including soft drinks, pastries, sweetened cereals, and sugars. Pick whole foods that contain rich complex carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals over processed foods.

Eat plenty of fiber. Fiber causes the cancer compounds to get out of the body before they create damage. The National Cancer Institute recommends getting 20 to 30 grams of fiber per day. Whole grain foods rich in fiber include barley, oats, oat bran, and nuts. Fruits containing rich fiber are apples, bananas, blackberries, citrus fruits, pears, and prunes. Other foods high on fiber include lima, lentils, brussel sprouts, carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, and broccoli.

Certain foods have been found to help people in their struggle against cancer.

Green tea is the best source of catechins in the human diet. It contains nearly three times the amount of catechins than black tea. The catechins found in tea prevent enzyme activities that lead to cancer and also repair cellular damage caused by free radicals. Green tea has been shown to block cancer development in colon, liver, breast, and prostate cells. It has been shown to prevent recurrence of stage one breast cancer.

Tomatoes contain phytochemical lycopene also found in watermelon, papaya, and pink grapefruit. Studies have confirmed their is a lower chance of cancer in those who conserve high amounts of lycopene. Lycopene compounds tend to concentrate in the prostate tissues so its protective agency has received the most attention there. Tomatoes have the highest anti-cancer potential when taken in a processed form such as tomato sauce, tomato paste, and tomato juice, because of easier absorption. African American were found to have eight times the risk of developing cancer when lycopene levels were lowest.

Garlic is a natural antibiotic and it increases the enzymes that break down carcinogens in the body. Research has shown that garlic is one of the best foods to eat for cancer prevention. It also slows or stops the growth of tumors in prostate, bladder, and stomach tissue. Studies also point out that it prevents cancer of the lungs and skin. The Iowa Women's Health Study found that women who regularly ate garlic had a lower risk for colon cancer.

Grapes especially of the red and purple variety, contain high levels of resveratrol, which belongs to a kind of plant chemicals called polypheonals. Reseveratol has been shown to slow the growth of cancer cells inhibit the formation of tumors.
