For some, human beings cannot change the way they are. For others, change is part of an enriched life vocabulary. Human beings have the potential to change who they are; whether they take that potential and use it is completely up to them.

The word of this year (and the last election year) has been "change." And, rightfully so. Change is what is needed if the human race is going to save itself and its planet. We know that we can change ourselves, but it is so convenient to keep our current lifestyles that we not only avoid change, but we can sometimes hate it.

We can change the way we conduct our lives: we can recycle, we can drive environmentally-friendly cars, we can better our health; but at the same time, we have to ask ourselves, "Can we change who we really are?" And again, we have to ask, "How can we know what and who we really are?"

In general, people do not actively think about change because, as aforementioned, change disrupts our lives. We want to live in a consistent world, a world in which actions and consequences can be, to some measure, predicted. However, if we continue to think in this way, we will pass up the opportunity to better our lives.

Change is, however, easily said than done. In the case of human relationships, change is very difficult. When our partners or loved ones ask us to "change," we can only say that we "try." And, we can't expect change to take place immediately. Often, our expectations are too high; we want a certain amount of change.

But, for some, change is almost impossible. For instance, those who have habits will not change so easily. Those who have addictions will not be able to change as quickly as they would like to. That is why it is so difficult for people to quit smoking or drinking. But, these people are able to change because they are motivated to do so. Those who are able to quit smoking have found a motivation that has allowed them to change. Thus, even change is not impossible for those who have addictions.

Those who have some flaws in their personalities, such as those with criminal tendencies, also have a difficult time changing themselves. But, if they find some sort of motivation or distraction, they will be able to change. Again, potential is a key word. People have the potential to change; if they find the motivation to do so, they can change. Thus, humans can change the way they are only if they are willing to do so.
